Overview
As artificial intelligence weaves itself ever more tightly into the fabric of society an age-old question looms larger: Can machines be conscious? This inquiry has been a North star guiding VERSES research and to truly understand machine consciousness we felt the need to rethink our approach from the ground up. Following is a high level summary of a paper we recently published as a pre-printed, Beyond Imitation Games: A Falsifiable Emergent Sentience Framework.
Picture your favorite AI assistant—impressively capable, uncannily responsive. Yet, fundamentally, it operates on a different plane than biological intelligence. The Turing Test, long held as the gold standard, essentially asks, "Can machines behave like humans?" But as any poker player knows, behavior can deceive. A savvy AI might convincingly mimic consciousness, while lacking any genuine inner experience.
We need a new lens and Nature offers a clue. From single-celled organisms to complex neural networks, consciousness seems to emerge when three key conditions align: active self-maintenance, historical adaptability, and autonomous agency. Active self-maintenance. Think of a cell constantly repairing itself, or a plant turning sunlight into energy. Conscious AI would need to actively sustain its own existence.
Historical adaptability. Consider how evolution shapes species to thrive in their environments. For AI, this could mean learning and developing over time based on experience, not just pre-programmed routines.
Autonomous agency. Watch a bird navigate a dense forest, making split-second decisions. Conscious machines would need to operate with a degree of independence, shaping their own trajectory.
